Southern Leyte State U debuts in Times Higher Education world ranking, lands 27th best PH university

As we strive towards global connectivity, Southern Leyte State University has achieved a remarkable feat by being ranked as the 27th best university in the Philippines in the 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, as results were revealed on Thursday, June 1, 2023.

THE Impact Rankings evaluates universities based on their contributions towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These rankings consider factors such as research output, community engagement, teaching practices, and sustainability initiatives.

Published annually since 2019 by the international higher education publication Times Higher Education, this year's rankings included a total of 1,591 universities from 104 countries and regions.

Out of the 29 universities from the Philippines featured, four of which are from Eastern Visayas. Alongside Southern Leyte State U are Leyte Normal University, University of Eastern Philippines, and Visayas State University.

Southern Leyte State U obtained a global ranking of 1,001+ among participating universities worldwide. Meanwhile, Ateneo de Manila University has maintained its position as the top-ranked Philippine university for three consecutive years, securing a worldwide spot in the 201-300 bracket.

Southern Leyte State U contributed to five of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Here is the ranking breakdown for these specific SDGs:

SDG 4 (Quality Education): 1001+
SDG 5 (Gender Equality): 801-1000
SDG 14 (Life Below Water): 401+
SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): 1001+

Engagement with the global community has always been an integral part of Southern Leyte State U's mission. The university's various units actively participate in sustainability programs, environmental initiatives, socio-political engagements, and endeavors aimed at addressing social inequalities.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established by the United Nations in 2015, serve as a blueprint for creating a better and more sustainable future. These 17 interconnected goals form a comprehensive framework that calls for immediate action and global collaboration, involving both developed and developing nations.

THE Impact Rankings is one of the several university ranking tables published by Times Higher Education. Their primary ranking is the THE World University Rankings, which is widely recognized in the global academic community.
