RIES, FAS Hold Writeshop for Completed Research and Commentary Papers

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences successfully conducted a two-day writing workshop on July 28–29, 2025, aimed at refining completed research papers and producing commentary articles. The event not only resulted in research papers ready for submission to Scopus-indexed journals but also enabled faculty members to generate high-quality commentaries in their respective fields of interest. By the end of the second day, several outputs were already finalized and submitted for consideration in reputable journals.

The research assistants provided valuable support throughout the activity by identifying high-quality journals that do not require article processing charges (APCs). These efforts align with SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting academic excellence and enhancing scholarly productivity across various disciplines.

In this session, Dr. Ramirez guided participants on how to craft commentary articles for submission to scientific journals. Commentaries, or thought papers, are examples of non-method manuscripts that can be published alongside other scholarly formats such as Letters to the Editor. This initiative supports SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by fostering collaboration among institutions in the Visayas and Mindanao regions to elevate regional research visibility and impact.

The university now actively encourages faculty members to publish non-method papers in addition to full-length journal articles within their areas of expertise. In the previous year, the university achieved a milestone by publishing over one hundred papers. These scholarly outputs contribute to the advancement of knowledge relevant to SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), particularly in the fields of social sciences and governance.

To further strengthen the production of journal articles and non-method papers, The Office of Research and Innovation funded a series of writeshops across the university’s colleges to drive the university’s research output and visibility in Google Scholar and Scopus-indexed platforms, thereby advancing the university’s commitment to sustainable academic growth and innovation (SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth).

By integrating the SDGs into its research agenda, the university reinforces its role in promoting inclusive and sustainable academic development, in alignment with both national priorities and global education and innovation goals.
