Brewing Success: Library-Learning Commons Continues Finals Week Tradition with Extended Hours and Free Refreshments

Final exam season is often one of the most challenging periods for students—but at Southern Leyte State University, the University Library-Learning Commons has found a thoughtful way to make it a little lighter and more bearable. From May 19 to 23, 2025, the library once again carried out its now-anticipated tradition of offering Extended Library Hours with Free Coffee and Snacks, a well-loved initiative designed to provide students with a more comfortable and welcoming space for long study sessions.
Held at the General Reading Area, the initiative gave students the opportunity to study longer hours in a quiet and supportive environment. But beyond just extended access to resources and study space, the library created a warm atmosphere by serving free coffee, non-caffeinated drinks, and a delightful spread of snacks—a gesture that showed students that their hard work is seen, supported, and valued.
The snack selection featured both comforting and memory-boosting options. Students enjoyed a variety of biscuits, bread, puto cheese, and native treats such as chocolate moron, offering not just nourishment but a taste of home. To top it off, baked peanuts were also served—believed to help enhance focus and brain function, especially helpful during intense review sessions.
This initiative doesn’t just support academic needs; it also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly SDG 2: Zero Hunger by addressing short-term food insecurity among students during finals, and SDG 4: Quality Education by promoting equitable access to a supportive learning environment that fosters student success.
This thoughtful program has grown into more than just a finals week feature—it’s become a tradition rooted in care, community, and generosity. Its continued success is made possible by the generous donors who consistently extend their support. Their kindness and contributions are the heart behind this effort, turning an idea into a legacy that students have come to look forward to every semester.
Through small comforts like warm drinks and local snacks, the University Library-Learning Commons reaffirms its role as more than just a place for books—it is a space that nurtures both the academic and emotional well-being of its students. With each finals week, this initiative continues to brew success, one cup of coffee and one shared smile at a time.
