SLSU-Maasin City Campus Hosts Hands-On Workshop on Empowering Research through Bibliometric Analysis

Southern Leyte State University (SLSU)–Maasin City Campus successfully held a two-day workshop titled, “Empowering Research through Bibliometric Analysis: A Hands-on Workshop”, on July 17–18, 2025, at the Countrylodge, Maasin City. The event aimed to enhance the research capabilities of faculty and staff by utilizing modern bibliometric tools and technologies.
Aligned with SDG 4: Quality Education, this initiative supports lifelong learning by equipping educators and researchers with skills in advanced research analytics.
The event commenced with a warm welcome from Dr. Frederick C. Aniga, the Campus Administrator of SLSU-Maasin City Campus. In his welcome message, he emphasized the importance of staying updated with research trends and tools that promote evidence-based academic output.
Mr. Rannie M. Sumacot, the Research and Innovation (RI) Coordinator, introduced the distinguished resource speakers: Melvin Sarsale, DBA, and Ms. Catherine Garcia, both known for their expertise in research analytics and bibliometric methodologies.
During the sessions, Mr. Melvin Sarsale introduced the participants to Biblioshiny, a user-friendly web interface for Bibliometrix, an R tool for comprehensive science mapping analysis. He demonstrated how to create a publishable research proposal using a variety of tools, including ChatGPT, Scopus data files, Bibliometric Shiny, Reviewers, and PostViewer.
This component of the training supports SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, by promoting innovation and building research infrastructure through technology-driven practices.
Ms. Catherine Garcia facilitated a technical session on the correct process of handling and analyzing data. Her precise and methodical approach helped participants gain confidence in navigating bibliometric software and understanding how data can support their research direction.
A total of 14 participant groups actively engaged in the workshop. Among them, three groups presented their proposed research titles, represented by Trisha Llagas, Nonito Deligero Jr., and Juvenal F. Sumaya. Their presentations demonstrated how bibliometric analysis can be applied to develop research topics grounded in current trends and academic gaps.
For insights and feedback, Mr. James Michael Amrinto (Faculty) and Mr. Joseph B. Nantes (Staff) shared their experiences. Both expressed how the use of Biblioshiny made the research proposal process more manageable and efficient. They emphasized that the training bridged theoretical understanding with hands-on application, which is essential for academic growth.
The event concluded with closing remarks from Mr. Jonathan Palco, Head of the Research, Innovation, and Extension Services (RIES). He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the resource speakers, campus leadership, and all participants. He reiterated the university’s commitment to empowering its academic community through continuous training and innovation.
The collaborative spirit of the event also aligns with SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, encouraging cooperation among educators, researchers, and institutions to advance global academic achievement.
With strengthened skills and new tools in hand, the participants are now better equipped to contribute meaningful research to their fields, aligned with global academic standards.
