SLSU Participates in National Accreditation Harmonization Workshop for Teacher Education Programs

Southern Leyte State University (SLSU), together with other leading Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) from Region VIII, took part in the national workshop titled “Strengthening the Quality Assurance of Teacher Education Programs in the Philippines through International Partnership and Collaboration.” Held from July 30 to August 1, 2025, at the Luxent Hotel in Quezon City, the event was jointly organized by the Accrediting Agency for Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP), Inc. and the Association of Teacher Education Network - Quality Assurance Agency (ATQA).
The three-day workshop brought together selected education leaders and accreditation experts from across the country to review and harmonize existing accreditation frameworks. Among the Region VIII delegates were representatives from Southern Leyte State University (SLSU), Leyte Normal University (LNU), Visayas State University (VSU),and Biliran Province State University (BiPSU). Representing SLSU was Dr. Norla Grace Betarmos, Dean of the College of Teacher Education. Notably, participation in this national gathering was by invitation only, extended to a select group of teacher education deans whose institutions had received the EQUATE award—recognizing exemplary performance in quality assurance and teacher education.
The workshop aimed to develop a harmonized accreditation framework for teacher education programs, compare and align the evaluation instruments used by AACCUP and ATQA, and establish a dual recognition system between the two agencies. Participants engaged in collaborative plenary sessions and breakout workshops to analyze current instruments, formulate policy guidelines, and outline a transition roadmap for institutions adopting the harmonized system. Throughout the event, participants contributed to the drafting of a unified evaluation tool, a comparative analysis report, and a proposed policy framework for dual recognition.
This event signifies a milestone in the ongoing reform of the teacher education sector in the Philippines. By participating in the development of a more unified and internationally aligned accreditation system, SLSU and institutions reaffirm their role in shaping the future of quality teacher preparation nationwide. Thus, this effort supports Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education.
